Is Quality & Pedigree Important
When Purchasing A Family Pet?

Does the quality of an animal really matter to a buyer?
It should.
Where does the quality of an animal come from?
The pedigree or lineage of the dog.

So how do you as a buyer know which breeder to choose? It can be difficult for sure because some of them have become very savvy and have learned the correct "lingo" to pull buyers in, while others have nice websites that lead you to believe they are on the up and up. Buyers can be easily mislead into believing these breeders have good dogs when that couldn't be further from the truth.

You will often see on their websites full of photos of not so pretty Papillons, and less than pretty puppies. They always seem to tout on their websites that "pedigrees" aren't everything and what really matters is the love we give them. Well love certainly helps all things great and small, but it won't help the bad knees, bad hearts, bad temperaments or down right ugly looks!

They love to brag that their dogs are "AKC pointed", or have International championships....but what they don't tell you is that anyone can point any dog at an AKC event just by going to a show in the middle of now where and beating one other dog and it's usually a dog they have entered to ensure there is a point! Also, anyone can go to a dog show and take a "show" photo whether they won or not just by asking the photographer, and any dog can acheive an international championship by just entering and showing up! The bottom line is at the end of the day their dogs still lack quality because anyone can stack a ring at a show in the middle of no where, and get AKC pointed dogs, or International champions BUT not everyone can finish an AKC champion! The proof really is in the pudding as I say, and their dogs and record should speak volumes about the quality of dogs they as breeders choose to use for their breeding program. I can't tell you who to choose, but I can suggest to you why I believe you shouldn't choose some of them.

Breeders who use lesser quality animals for breeding, ultimately produce an inferior quality companion animal that more than not, runs a higher risk of developing health problems early in life, and not to mention they are never the most attractive of Papillons either. AKC Registration and Quality: There is a widely held belief that "AKC" or "AKC papers" guarantee the quality of a dog. This is not the case. AKC is a registry body. A registration certificate identifies the dog as the offspring of a known sire and dam, born on a known date. It in no way indicates the quality or state of health of the dog. Quality in the sense of "show quality" is determined by many factors including the dog's health, physical condition, ability to move and appearance. Breeders breeding show stock are trying to produce animals that closely resemble the description of perfection described in the breed standard. Many people breed their dogs with no concern for the qualitative demands of the breed standard. When this occurs repeatedly over several generations, the animals, while still purebred, can be of extremely low quality. Before buying a dog, you should investigate the dog's parentage (including titles, DNA and pedigree information), the breeder's breeding practices, the breed standard, and the genetic tests recommended by the Parent Club for the breed. For more information regarding purchasing a puppy/dog go to About Buying a Dog and visit the Parent Club website.

Please don't fall for their schemes that play on your desires for a puppy. Buy from a breeder who loves the breed, knows the breed well, and can answer any questions you throw at them honestly, and who ultimately breed to the AKC standard. Yes, this is very important too! My theory is this...."You can pay a little more up front for a pretty, healthy, happy puppy from a reputable breeder, or pay what seems like a more reasonable price upfront for a poorer quality specimen, bred by a back yard breeder or puppy mill. If you decide on the latter you must then get ready to find out the real cost of you puppy and begin to really take it in the pocket book later for all your upcoming vet bills!" So, what you need to decide is where you want to pay and spend your hard earned money; up front, on or the tail end. Either way you are going to get what you pay for.

You will find many different breeders available to you from my area, the Northwest region, or from all over the world via other internet websites, and all are offering puppies for lower or bargain pricing. All breeders are motivated by different things for sure and not all of it is good. For some they breed Papillons for the money they get from their puppies, for others it's for improving the breed as a whole.

When it comes to Papillons I have dedicated nearly thirty years of my life to improving the breed. I studied the breed for quite a few years before I ever had my first litter and I didn't run out and just start breeding because I had a male and a female Papillon. Before the age of internet and email I researched pedigree volumes, handbooks, hundreds of mentor letters, and sat ring side watching breed type for many years until I knew what I wanted in a Papillon. To date I have finished many, many Papillon champions over the decades and never stacked a ring to finish them. The dogs that grace my website today are proof that the dogs I continue to use in my breeding program remain strong in quality and are from some of the best dogs and lines out there in Papillons today. I breed for quality dogs that adhere closely to the PCA and AKC Papillon standard. Crisanda Papillons repeatedly go on to finish their American championships and usually achieve their American Championship titles by 13 months of age.

In addition, we don't stack a ring to make our own points by going to the middle no man's land where there is no competition just to win points so that we can say on our website that our dogs "are AKC pointed". Crisanda Papillons are sent into heavy breed competition and hold their own by winning huge majors against other top Papillon breeders coming home American champions. I don't think any of these breeders claiming that pedigrees "aren't everything" can boast even one American championship title to their credit, on any one of their dogs, in all the years they have been showing let alone several championships per year like Crisanda can. That alone should tell you something right there.

Is a championship important to you? It should be and here's why. You may only want a pet, but to have a pet coming from correct, beautiful, and healthy stock should be what you want from your puppy. It benefits you in the end. Most of my Papillons that I place as pets could finish their championships and you don't end up a with 14", coarse, ugly papillon as a pet. The dogs I raise are beautiful, well rounded, and balanced both mentally and structurally.

There is a reason these breeders can't and don't finish championships on their dogs and it's not political so don't buy into that one! Their Papillons usually have many, many faults, and some of those faults are severe. Their dogs are not correct in many ways so they can't win because they are not what the breed standard calls for. There is a reason these dogs can't finish championships so you would think that would be reason enough NOT to use them as your foundation breeding dogs!!! Do you really want one of these dogs as a parent of your puppy? Ever heard this one? The apple never falls far from the tree. It's true in dogs as well. The faults in the parents usually carry on to the offspring and it all comes back to???...guess what...PEDIGREES!!! They are only fooling themselves and their pet buyers by saying it doesn't matter. It does matter. It takes a very skilled and knowledgeable breeder to out maneuver even the smallest of faults, let alone overcoming the severe ones!

The pedigrees I use are proven to consistently produce Papillons of outstanding quality and health. Don't let them fool you. They may tell you that good pedigrees aren't important, and they may have learned to "talk the talk" , but hear it from me now...the proof is really in the pudding. Good pedigrees ARE what it takes to produce a PRETTY, HAPPY, HEALTHY and STABLE papillon and anything less that that is wishful thinking on their part and fool's play. Is a pedigree everything when it comes to raising and socializing a wonderful puppy? No, of course not. Common sense would tell you there is more to raising a happy puppy than that, HOWEVER a pedigree IS the genetic foundation in which a breeder should build on to ensure proper temperaments in their puppies, after all that is where the temperament comes from initially, the pedigree! I don't have flakey Papillon temperaments and that is because of the pedigrees I use. I breed from top producing, top winning Papillon lines that have been proven to produce beautiful Papillons generation after generation which ultimately is beneficial to a buyer looking for a pretty, well rounded Papillon for their home.

I am willing to take the time to assist and help others in their quest for that ideal butterfly or moth companion. I take that time, not because I have a puppy I want to sell you, because I seldom have any to sell, but because I feel education is of the upmost importance in order to protect and preserve our little breed. It really should be every breeders top priority as well. I will assist you in answering any questions you may have regarding the breed ,or in locating that perfect Papillon or Phalène baby from a reputable breeder in any state. It is so very important for perspective buyers to avoid people that are out there wanting to make a quick buck off of a needy public. These back yard breeders, or puppy millers simply don't have the knowledge base or fortitude to breed a healthy, happy puppy. They just want to make a quick buck off of you and your desire to have a puppy. Please buy from a breeder who shows their dogs in "good" competition, and then chooses the best there is to breed with. This produces a better quality of puppy, and will ulitmately produce a healthier, happier, prettier, puppy for you to love. This may not seem important to a person that is just looking for a pet/companion Papillon, but in essence it is very important for companion dogs too!
