DO:
Take your Papillon to dog-friendly cafes and businesses.
Visit friends and relatives with your pup.
Introduce the pup to lots of friendly strangers.
Make sure the pup meets gentle, well-behaved children.
Attend a well-run puppy kindergarten with pups your Pap’s size to play with.
Introduce your Papillon to friendly, gentle and healthy adult dogs.
Give your pup a chance to observe unfamiliar sights, sounds and smells.
Bring food, water, chew toys and cleanup supplies on all puppy outings.
Always clean up when your dog poops during outings.
Visit your veterinary clinic occasionally to have staff just pet your pup and give it treats.
Keep your Papillon leashed when in unfenced areas.
On car rides, use a crate or other dog-safe restraint device for your Pap.
DON’T:
Take your pup to public parks, where it might pick up a virus, until it’s had its vaccinations.
Take your Papillon to unrestricted dog parks where big dogs might play roughly and hurt it.
(Look for one with a separate small-dog play area.)
Allow children to play with your Pap unattended.
Let your Pap rush up to strange dogs, even seemingly friendly ones-some dogs think Papillons are squeaky toys or prey.
Assume every training class or puppy playgroup is appropriate for toy-breed dogs observe a group in progress and interview the trainers about their experience with small breeds before enrolling.
